Doris Makes Irish Selection While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn Tests, but lock McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's three league matches this season and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris should the captain fails to recover fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
